The roots of Sennelier's watercolors are to be found in the impressionist school. At that time, painters drew inspiration from nature and set about reproducing natural light. The watercolor technique offered spontaneity, lightness of touch, fluidity and transparency allowing for the rapid translation of a particular light, vibration or shape.

It is such a pleasure when the painter plays with the light of the paper and the brightness of the volatile, intense pigments as they shimmer, coalesce and swirl under the brush to create a range of different effects.

L'Aquarelle Sennelier has been produced in the same way for over a century, using the finest pigments and premium Kordofan gum arabic as a binder. This blend of natural ingredients creates paints that have a smooth, bright texture and offer vibrant color shades. The combination of gum arabic and honey offers an incomparable application quality and delivers excellent washing. Then this base is mixed with pigments and carefully ground. Sennelier makes sure to soak the pigments in purified water (without mineral salts) for 24 hours before mixing them with the binder. It improves the way the colors and joints come together, which in turn brings out the full beauty of the colors.

Sennelier watercolors are sanded in the traditional way using sanding stones that rotate slowly so that the paste does not heat up. This operation is carried out in several stages until the paste is as fine as possible, thus getting rid of all particles that could impair the perfection of the wash.

Made using the finest pigments, Kordofan gum arabic and honey, these watercolors are evenly enhanced with glitter for a striking iridescent effect. When used straight from the tube (undiluted), the color is very opaque; diluted with water provides transparent effects. Honey also acts as a preservative to extend shelf life.
